About Andrew Hawkins

Andrew Hawkins is an engineering leader and technical architect based in Portland, Oregon. He works where product strategy, software architecture, and team design meet: turning ambiguous problems into systems that people can build, operate, and improve with confidence.

Background

Andrew began his career in technical data and risk analysis at GE Capital after studying Financial Mathematics and Economics at Vanderbilt University. He later joined Tidy.com as a founding engineer, building the core property-technology platform and production machine-learning systems before moving into engineering management.

As a senior engineering manager at Tidy.com, he led global remote teams, coached engineers through architecture decisions, and helped shape product and AI strategy. He later served as Head of Engineering at Torch, directing the architecture and delivery of AI products that combined retrieval systems, multi-agent workflows, and organizational intelligence.

How he works

Andrew favors small, testable releases over large speculative programs. His approach connects a clear product outcome to an architecture that can evolve, then gives teams enough context and autonomy to make good local decisions. He is most useful in situations where the technical path, organizational shape, or delivery sequence is not yet obvious.

His writing develops the same ideas in public: how to reduce deploy friction, find the smallest useful increment, design fully remote organizations, recognize leadership at every level, and distinguish visible activity from durable value. The essays are first-person source material and are available in both HTML and raw markdown.
